Dawn M. Venema, PT, PhD                      Emily Young PT, DPT                 Ka-Chun(Joseph) Siu, PhD

Dr. Emily (Bartels) Young PT, DPT, Staff Physical Therapist at Cozad Community Physical Therapy recently had the opportunity to attend American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) Combined Sections Meeting (CSM) in San Diego, California.

While at CSM, Dr. Young was honored with the Student Research Award from the Section on Geriatrics. This prestigious award recognizes outstanding performance by a physical therapy student participating in academic research. Dr. Young received this award for her involvement in geriatric research while a student at University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. She co-authored a peer reviewed research article published in the  Journal of Geriatric Physical Therapy titled, “Tasks Matter: A Cross-sectional Study of the Relationship of Cognition and Dual-Task Performance in Older Adults.” Venema DM, Bartels E, Sui KC. Geriatr Phys Ther. 2012 Dec 17 [EPub].

This study examined the relationship between dual-task performance and cognitive impairment. Dual tasking is the ability to divide one's attention between motor and secondary tasks and is required in daily life. The results showed that adults with cognitive impairment experience more difficulty with dual tasks than healthy older adults.  The results also suggest that patients with cognitive impairment may be able to engage in more challenging tasks than might be assumed.

Co-author Dr. Dawn Venema stated, “Emily was an integral part of the success of our study starting with her assistance with recruitment of participants, and ending with publication of a research article that she helped to write.  She provided us with dependable and capable support while demonstrating a high level of motivation and interest in the research process.”

While attending the conference, Dr. Young also received advance training on physical therapy interventions for pelvic pain in pregnant and postpartum women. She also learned the role physical ther apists can play in labor and delivery positioning to potentially improve birthing outcomes.
